GitHub Copilot Certification (GH-300): What It Really Tests
Microsoft's GH-300 GitHub Copilot certification checks features and responsible use. Exam format, cost, and what it can't show about real codebase skill.

Yes. GitHub's official Copilot certification is the GitHub Copilot exam, GH-300, run through Microsoft Learn and open to anyone. It's a proctored, intermediate-level exam that checks what you know about Copilot's features, responsible use and privacy settings. It doesn't check whether someone makes good calls on Copilot's suggestions in a real codebase, which is what most engineering leads actually want to know.
GH-300 in one paragraph
GH-300 is GitHub's Copilot certification exam. It is intermediate level, proctored, scheduled through Pearson VUE on Microsoft Learn, and gives you 100 minutes. Microsoft prices it by the country where you sit it. The credential is valid for two years.
What GH-300 covers
According to Microsoft Learn's certification page the exam is aimed at developers, DevOps engineers, app makers and technology managers who already know GitHub and at least one programming language. It assesses these areas:
- Using GitHub Copilot responsibly
- Using Copilot's features, across the different Copilot plans
- Understanding Copilot's data handling and architecture
- Prompt engineering and context crafting
- Improving developer productivity with Copilot
- Configuring privacy, content exclusions and safeguards
Format, cost and validity
- Format: a proctored exam with 100 minutes on the clock. Microsoft notes it may include interactive components, and offers a free practice assessment and an exam sandbox so you can see the question styles first.
- Cost: Microsoft sets the price by the country or region where the exam is proctored, so check the Learn page for yours before you budget.
- Validity: GitHub certifications are valid for two years. GitHub says it is moving to Microsoft's recertification process, so renewing won't mean retaking the full exam.
- Languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Korean and Japanese.
- Retakes: you can retake 24 hours after a first failed attempt; later retakes have longer waits.
How to prepare
Start with Microsoft's own material: the GH-300 study guide linked from the certification page, the GitHub Copilot Fundamentals learning paths on Microsoft Learn, and the free practice assessment. Then spend real time with Copilot in the editor on your own projects. The exam rewards knowing where settings live and what each plan includes, so hands-on use matters more than reading.
What GH-300 can't show you

GH-300 is a knowledge exam. Passing it tells you someone knows how Copilot works and how it should be configured. It can't tell you what happens when that person gets a plausible-looking suggestion in your codebase: do they take it as-is, edit it, or reject it, and can they explain why?
That judgment is where AI-assisted code goes wrong. A suggestion can compile, pass a quick glance and still miss your conventions, skip an edge case or pull in something it shouldn't. Checking that habit means watching real decisions on real code, reviewed by someone who knows what good looks like for your team.
GH-300 checks what someone knows about Copilot. A team needs to know what they do with it.
Microsoft 365 Copilot vs GitHub Copilot certifications: don't mix them up

"Copilot" covers two different products. GitHub Copilot is the coding assistant in your editor, and GH-300 is its certification. Microsoft 365 Copilot works inside Word, Outlook, Excel and Teams, and has separate credentials:
- Microsoft 365 Certified: Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals (AB-900), a 45-minute proctored exam for IT admins who support, secure and govern Copilot in Microsoft 365.
- Microsoft Applied Skills: Streamline business workflows with AI chat, a lab-based assessment of Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel.
The rule of thumb: if the people you're certifying write code, you want GitHub Copilot and GH-300. If they work in documents, email and spreadsheets, you want the Microsoft 365 credentials, and AB-900 only if they administer it.
Is GitHub Copilot certification worth it?
For an individual developer, GH-300 is a reasonable, low-friction credential: it's public, proctored and recognised. For a company standardising how a team uses Copilot, it answers only half the question. It's the same gap we found looking at Anthropic's Claude certification program: vendor exams check knowledge of the tool, not judgment on your work.
The team route
If you need proof that specific engineers use Copilot well on your code, the assessment has to happen on your code. That's the model behind our GitHub Copilot training for teams: self-paced modules, a live clinic, and a scenario review where each engineer walks an assessor through five real suggestions and justifies each call. If Copilot isn't the tool in question, see the full list of published tracks, or talk to a program lead.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a GitHub Copilot certification?
Yes. GitHub's official certification is the GitHub Copilot exam (GH-300), a proctored, intermediate-level exam scheduled through Pearson VUE on Microsoft Learn and open to the public.
What is the GH-300 exam?
GH-300 is GitHub's Copilot certification exam. It checks knowledge of Copilot's features, responsible use, data handling, prompt engineering and privacy settings, with 100 minutes to complete it.
How much does GH-300 cost?
Microsoft prices GH-300 by the country or region where the exam is proctored, so check the Microsoft Learn certification page for your location.
How do I prepare for GitHub Copilot certification?
Use Microsoft's GH-300 study guide, the GitHub Copilot Fundamentals learning paths and the free practice assessment on Microsoft Learn, and spend real time using Copilot in your editor.
Is GitHub Copilot certification worth it?
For an individual developer it's a recognised, public credential. For a team it checks knowledge of the tool, not how engineers judge Copilot's suggestions on your own code, so many companies add a practical assessment.
Is Microsoft 365 Copilot certification the same thing?
No. Microsoft 365 Copilot works in Word, Outlook, Excel and Teams and has separate credentials, such as the AB-900 administration exam. GH-300 is for GitHub Copilot, the coding assistant.
