Is the Claude Certified Architect exam worth it? For someone at a Claude partner firm who designs Claude systems for clients, yes: it's Anthropic's flagship credential and it tests real design judgment through production scenarios. For an engineer who mainly needs to show they can ship with Claude Code, it's a poor fit. It's a knowledge exam, most of it isn't about Claude Code, and you can only book it through the Claude Partner Network.

What is the Claude Certified Architect exam?

It's two exams. Foundations (CCAR-F) launched in March 2026 alongside the Claude Partner Network and was Anthropic's first certification. Professional (CCAR-P) is the advanced track. Both are proctored by Pearson VUE, online or at a test centre, and both are listed on Pearson VUE's Anthropic page. You'll often see Foundations written as "CCA-F" online; Pearson VUE's code is CCAR-F.

What the Foundations exam covers

Anthropic's Foundations guide splits the exam into five weighted domains:

Agentic architecture and orchestration27%
Claude Code configuration and workflows20%
Prompt engineering and structured output20%
Tool design and MCP integration18%
Context management and reliability15%

The questions are grouped into realistic production scenarios. Four are drawn at random from a bank of six: a customer support resolution agent, code generation with Claude Code, a multi-agent research system, developer productivity tools, Claude Code in continuous integration, and structured data extraction. The guide stresses practical judgment about architecture, configuration and trade-offs, not just definitions.

Five architecture concepts connect orchestration, workflows, prompts, tools and reliability.

What the Professional exam covers

The Professional guide lists seven domains:

Integration19%
Solution design and architecture17%
Evaluation, testing and optimisation16%
Governance, safety and risk management14%
Stakeholder communication and lifecycle management14%
Claude models, prompting and context engineering13%
Developer productivity and operational enablement7%

It's broader and more senior than Foundations: designing RAG pipelines, evaluation frameworks, governance and compliance, and communicating architectural decisions to stakeholders. The guide says it isn't for entry-level developers or for roles limited to prompt writing.

How hard is the Claude Certified Architect exam?

Anthropic calls Foundations a test of "practical judgment", and the scenario format means you can't pass on memorised definitions. Every option is designed to look plausible to someone with incomplete experience. The recommended six months of hands-on work across the API, Agent SDK, Claude Code and MCP is the realistic bar. Professional asks for years of architecture experience on top.

How to prepare

  • Read the exam guide for your level in full, and self-assess against every task statement.
  • Build something for each scenario type you're weakest on: an agent loop with tools, a coordinator with subagents, Claude Code configured with CLAUDE.md, skills and MCP, and a CI review job.
  • Use the free Anthropic Academy courses, such as Claude Code 101 and Claude Code in Action, as a base.
  • Partners get prep material through the Anthropic Partner Academy, where you also register.

What the Architect exam doesn't test

It tests whether you know how a Claude system should be designed and configured. It doesn't watch you direct Claude Code through a change in a real repository, review the diff it produces, or catch the scope creep and weakened tests that make agent-written code risky. Claude Code configuration is 20% of Foundations, and it's tested through multiple-choice questions, not hands-on work.

That's the same gap we found in the Claude Certified Developer exam. If your goal is proof that engineers can work safely with Claude Code on your codebase, a repository-based Claude Code assessment answers that directly, and it isn't limited to partner organisations.

A scenario-based design decision and an observed repository task provide different kinds of evidence.

Is it worth it?

  • Worth it if you work at a Claude partner, design Claude systems for clients, and want the official credential for your profile and your firm's partner standing.
  • Not the right tool if you're an engineer outside the partner network, or a lead who needs to know how your team works in its own repositories.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Claude Certified Architect exam?

Anthropic's architect certification, in two levels: Foundations (CCAR-F), launched in March 2026, and Professional (CCAR-P). Both are proctored by Pearson VUE and booked through the Claude Partner Network.

How hard is the Claude Certified Architect exam?

Foundations uses scenario-based questions that test practical judgment, and Anthropic recommends six months of hands-on work across the Claude API, Agent SDK, Claude Code and MCP. Professional recommends 3+ years in systems architecture as well.

What's the difference between Foundations and Professional?

Foundations covers five domains, from agentic architecture to context management, through production scenarios. Professional has 63 items across seven broader domains, including governance, evaluation and stakeholder communication, and costs $175.

How much does the Claude Certified Architect exam cost?

Professional costs $175 per attempt according to Anthropic's exam guide. Foundations is reported at $125 per attempt by prep providers citing Anthropic's July 2026 guide.

Is the Claude Certified Architect worth it?

Yes for people at Claude partner firms who design Claude systems for clients. Less so for engineers outside the partner network, or for teams that need to know how engineers work with Claude Code in their own repositories.
