Claude Code course certificates vs a proctored assessment.
Competitor facts checked 6 October 2026
The short version
Online course certificates, such as Coursera's Vanderbilt Claude Code course, show you finished a course, sometimes with graded assignments. A proctored assessment shows what you can do under observation. Course certificates are cheaper and open to everyone. If someone else needs to rely on the credential, an assessed one carries more weight.
| Course certificates (Coursera, Udemy) | Sthuthi proctored assessment | |
|---|---|---|
| Example | Coursera: Claude Code: Software Engineering with Generative AI Agents, from Vanderbilt University | Sthuthi Claude Code track |
| Length | Coursera: about 5 hours, 6 modules, self-paced | Cohort programme plus assessment |
| Assessment | Coursera: two graded assignments. Udemy courses typically issue a certificate of completion | Proctored live repository task, human-reviewed |
| Cost | Coursera: free to enrol; certificate and a Claude Code subscription are paid | Quoted per cohort |
| Who it suits | Individual learners, self-paced | Companies and institutions certifying a group |
| Verification | Platform certificate link | Credential ID checked with us |

What course certificates do well
They're inexpensive, flexible and open to anyone. Coursera's Claude Code course, taught by Vanderbilt University, runs about five hours across six modules, with two graded assignments and a shareable certificate for LinkedIn. It requires a paid Claude Code subscription to do the work. For an individual who wants structured learning and something to show, that's a reasonable choice.
Where they stop
Course certificates prove completion, and some include graded work, but we found no mention of proctoring or a live review of how someone handles a real repository. For a hiring manager or client who wants to know whether a person can safely direct an agent, that's a gap. We haven't been able to load Udemy's Claude Code certification course page to check its details, so we describe Udemy generally: its courses typically issue certificates of completion.
Where a proctored assessment is different
Our track watches the engineer do the work. They frame a scoped task, direct Claude Code through it and explain their review of the diff to a human assessor. The credential then carries an ID that someone else can ask us to verify.
It costs more and takes longer, and it's sold to organisations rather than individuals. If you're a learner, start with a course. If you're an employer or institution, ask what you need to rely on.
What each credential proves
Read a credential by what was checked, not by its name. Here's what each common type does and doesn't show an employer:
- Completion certificate (Udemy and most course platforms): the course was finished. No graded work, no proctor, no review of real work.
- Graded course certificate (Coursera's Vanderbilt course): assignments were submitted and graded. Not proctored, and not done in the holder's own repository.
- Vendor exam (Anthropic's CCDV-F): knowledge of the platform under proctored conditions. Not a hands-on task, and only open to partner organisations.
- Proctored task with human review (Sthuthi): the holder directed the tool through a real task while observed, and an assessor reviewed their decisions. Carries a credential ID an employer can verify with us.
Who each option is best for
A course certificate fits if
- You're an individual learner
- You want a flexible, low-cost start
- A completion record is enough
A proctored assessment fits if
- Someone else must rely on the result
- You're certifying many people
- You need evidence beyond attendance
What to know about us before you compare
- Our credential is independent. Anthropic does not issue or endorse it, and it does not count toward Anthropic partner tiers.
- We quote per cohort and don't publish a price list or pass rates.
- We are new. Our cohorts so far are with companies, not yet with colleges.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Coursera or Udemy Claude Code certificate worth it?
For learning, yes: they're affordable and structured. As proof of skill to an employer or client, a completion certificate is weaker than an assessed credential, so pair it with a real project.
Does Coursera's Claude Code course have a proctored exam?
The course page lists two graded assignments and a shareable certificate. We found no mention of proctoring.
Can individuals buy Sthuthi's assessment?
Not at the moment. It's offered to companies and institutions in cohorts. Individuals can start with a course.
